* Program Overview *

The Colquitt County School System’s Program for Exceptional Children includes services and supports that sustain the district’s schools in their efforts to provide special education and related services to students with disabilities. These services focus on enhancing student achievement and post-secondary outcomes through the implementation of system activities for students, families, educators, administrators, and other stakeholders. Targeted areas for services and supports include accessible instructional materials, assistive technology, curriculum access and alignment, dropout prevention, family engagement, least restrictive environment, positive behavior supports, and transition. Additional services include ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations for special education, collecting and analyzing data on educational services and outcomes, providing guidance and oversight of the budgets for local, state and federal special education funds, and coordinating dispute resolution requirements as required by state and federal regulations.

Special Education services are an integral part of the educational system of the Colquitt County School System (CCSS). We believe  that all students are capable of benefiting from, and have a right to, an educational program that is suitable to their needs. Special Education shares with regular education the basic responsibility of the public educational systems is to ensure that every student has the right to a free, appropriate education.

The mission of the Colquitt County Program for Exceptional Children is to ensure that all students with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services specifically designed to meet their unique needs and to prepare them for employment and independent living.
* Program Goals *
*To assist school-based personnel with the implementation and delivery of instruction.
*To assure the effective and proficient operation of the Colquitt County Program for Exceptional Children.
* Program Objectives *

*To establish and maintain effective authorized ways of identifying exceptional children.

*To assess the special needs of children to determine what kinds of special programs and services should be provided for them.

*To base decisions on current data and replicate research information.

*To plan, organize, and implement an appropriate variety of interventions and/or program alternatives for exceptional children.

*To assemble and organize the resources needed to conduct a comprehensive and rigorous program of special education.

*To use direction, coordination and consultation as required to guide the efforts of all those who engage in the special education enterprise.


*To conduct, evaluate, and research activities and projects to reflect new emphases and to incorporate new knowledge and constantly improve special instruction and the quality of special services.

*To involve community representatives in planning programs to encourage their understanding and support of the Program for Exceptional Children.

*To partner with parents, students and school personnel to meet state requirements for academics and attendance; and  to meet state provisions for drop-out, graduation and post-secondary transition rates.

*To conduct programs for staff development, such as in-service or continuing education programs.
