Semmes-Bryan-Simms Georgia Brigade

This brigade was originally commanded by Paul Jones Semmes. The brigade came into being after the Battle of Antietam, when Lee reorganized the Army of Northern Virginia. The brigade was assigned to Longstreet's Corps and McLaw's division. Semmes was mortally wounded during the brigade's action on the second day of Gettysburg. Colonel Goode Bryan of the 16th Georgia was promoted to command the brigade. Upon the resignation of Bryan in September, 1864, Colonel James P. Simms, of the 53rd Georgia was promoted to be brigade commander.
