Adventures, mysteries, fantasy or facts….good books are an important part of our school program. As part of the Georgia's Choice Reading Design, our goal is for each child to read one million words this year. Why? Because the more we read, the better we read!
How can your child read 1,000,000 words? See the chart below. Check with your child’s teacher about how you need to list and respond to books read at home.
Hats off to you for supporting our reading program!

With the help of the Colquitt County Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. David May, Sunset School officially began the 2003-2004 One-Million Word Campaign during a special program on September 4th.
With the help of a building crew, Mr. Owen made plans to reach "sky high" with reading achievement this year. His crew came prepared with enthusiasm, character, determination, and teamwork. Unfortunately, the Book Burglars had other plans, and they took the load of building blocks Mr. Owen had gathered for the project. The sneaky burglars replaced the blocks with books!
Deputy Tenero Bender was on hand to help solve the crime and found out that Sunset boys and girls could achieve their learning goals by reading lots of books. In fact, reading one million words would take our children to the sky high goal Mr. Owen had planned!
Mr. Owen and Dr. Sheumaker challenged the students to read, read, and read and everyone got started! As for the Book Burglars, we all wondered if we would see them again!
The lively tunes from the Jazz Band gave everyone the energy they need to start reading! |
Miss Avis brought her enthusiasm and Counselor Mrs. Folsom was ready with good character. |
Adding Mrs. Bennett's determination and Dr. Sheumaker's teamwork, Mr. Owen's crew had the tools they needed to start building high achievement. |
Who's taking the building blocks? |
|
While the crew was busy planning, those sneaky Book Burglars were at work. |
Fortunately, Deputy Bender was on the job! Could he find the blocks? |
|
Listen up, Crew! It's not blocks we need, it's BOOKS! Mr. Owen challenged all of our students to read one million words! |
These Book Burglars knew exactly what they were doing taking away the blocks and bringing books. |
|
Here's the clue the Book Burglars left for Mr. Owen: We like your goal to build sky high, And you have great tools to give it a try. But if you want Sunset boys and girls to shine, It isn't bricks you need for your design. Reading books, LOTS of books will do the trick! Reading one million words is stronger than brick. Take these books and begin to read. We know you and the students will surely succeed! Do you think the Book Burglars will be back? |
