Important Announcement decorative

In compliance with the Tax Payers Bill of Rights, the Colquitt County School District today announces its intention to set the General Fund millage rate of 8.190.

The Colquitt County Board of Education receives state funds from the Georgia Department of Education each year.  A portion of those state funds, known as Equalization, have rules, per the Official Georgia Code, that the School Board must follow to be eligible to receive the Equalization funds.

Official Georgia Code 20-2-165-(9)(c) requires a minimum millage rate to qualify for Equalization.  Beginning July 1, 2019, school districts must have a millage rate of at least 14 mills.

This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 8.190, an increase of 0.85 mills.  Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 7.340 mills.  The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $32.30, and the proposed tax increase for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $300,000 is approximately $102.00.  The tentative millage rate will result in an 11.58 percent increase over the rollback millage rate.

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

The budget adopted by the Colquitt County Board of Education requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate; therefore, before the Colquitt County Board of Education sets a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings to be held:
